Ants and termites are often confused, yet these two social insects have nothing in common phylogenetically. One is a cousin of the wasp, the other of the cockroach. Let’s break it down in 7 points.
1. Radically different evolutionary origins
Ants belong to the order Hymenoptera. They appeared around 100 million years ago from a common ancestor with wasps and bees.
Termites belong to the order Blattodea. They descend from the cockroach lineage (yes, roaches!) and their common ancestor with ants goes back more than 300 million years. They have no close relationship.
Their similar social organisation (colonies, castes) results from convergent evolution: two groups independently developed the same kind of organisation to adapt to their environment.
2. Morphology: 4 visible differences

To tell them apart quickly: look at the antenna. Elbowed at 90° in the middle = ant. Straight like a string of beads = termite. It’s the most reliable and fastest criterion.
3. Opposite diets
Ants: omnivores, but broadly carnivorous. They hunt other insects, gather nectar, honeydew and seeds. A few rare species (Atta) cultivate a fungus.
Termites: almost exclusively xylophagous. They consume wood and cellulose. They couldn’t digest it without symbiotic micro-organisms (protozoa, bacteria) hosted in their gut, which break the cellulose down for them.
4. Habitat and nest
Ants: very varied nests depending on species. Underground, in dead wood, in trees, under stones, in walls. Always made up of chambers and galleries.
Termites: mostly underground or in-wood nests. Some tropical species build spectacular mounds of clay and saliva, several metres tall, with sophisticated ventilation systems.
5. Social structure
Both have queens, workers and soldiers. But:
- Ants: males die just after the nuptial flight. One queen permanently in the colony.
- Termites: the queen AND the king live together in the colony. The king lives as long as the queen and accompanies her throughout her life. Reproduction is continuous.
Another major difference: in ants, the workers are sterile females. In termites, the workers are immature juveniles (male or female), able to resume their development under certain conditions.
6. Ecological role
Ants: predators and cleaners. Important for regulating populations of other insects and for seed dispersal.
Termites: major recyclers of dead plant matter. In tropical forests, they break down 50% of the plant biomass that falls to the ground. Without them, carbon would stay trapped in dead trees.
7. Dangers to humans
Ants can sting or spray formic acid, but they don’t damage buildings (with rare exceptions like Camponotus, which nest in wood without eating it).
Termites, on the other hand, are structural destroyers. A termite colony in a house can destroy the timbers within a few years. Termite control is regulated and costly in France (notably Reticulitermes flavipes in the south-west).
A termite infestation is not trivial. Contact a certified professional. In France, some areas are declared “at termite risk” by prefectural decree, which requires an inspection when selling a property.
In summary
Ants and termites are the perfect example of convergent evolution: two groups with no close relationship that nevertheless developed a similar social organisation independently. That’s what makes them so fascinating to compare: the same solution, two completely different histories.
