The Indian jumping ant
Harpegnathos saltator is one of the most astonishing ants in the world. With large eyes giving binocular vision and long, sharp mandibles, it jumps to capture its prey — a rare behaviour among ants. A running leap of 10 to 20 cm.
Like Diacamma, it can produce gamergates: fertile workers that take over from the founding queen if she dies. Polygynous-gamergate colonies, very stable over the long term.
H. saltator is studied worldwide to understand social transitions: when a worker becomes a gamergate, her life expectancy multiplies by 5. It’s one of the only biological models where social status directly influences longevity at the cellular level.
Hunting behaviour
A visual hunter, unlike most ants that hunt by smell. Its large eyes give excellent binocular vision. It stalks its prey, gauges the distance, and leaps with precision onto flies, grasshoppers and other small insects.
A strictly carnivorous diet: no honeydew, no sugar. Live insects only. The colony consumes a lot of prey — plan for a steady culture of fruit flies or crickets.
