How long does an ant live? Workers, queens and males

How long an ant lives is a topic that’s often misunderstood. The truth: it depends enormously on the caste and the species. A worker lives a few months, while a queen can reach 30 years. Let’s break it down.

Workers: from a few months to 5 years

Workers live on average 1 to 3 years, sometimes more depending on the species and their role in the colony.

  • Small species (Tetramorium, Solenopsis): 6 months to 1 year
  • Medium species (Lasius, Myrmica): 1-2 years
  • Large species (Camponotus, Messor): 2-5 years

Workers that spend their lives in the nest (nurses, guards) generally live longer than those foraging outside, exposed to predators, weather and stress.

The worker record

Some Pogonomyrmex workers (American harvester ant) have lived up to 7 years in captivity. An exceptional but scientifically documented record.

Males: short-lived

Males are the great forgotten ones of the ant world. Their lifespan is extremely short: a few days to a few weeks, rarely more.

Their only role is to mate with a queen during the nuptial flight. Once done, they die (sometimes during the act). Males that fail to find a partner also die of hunger, because they are unable to feed themselves (they aren’t built to hunt, and their mandibles are atrophied).

Queens (gynes): longevity champions

Queens hold the longevity record among insects. A queen can live 15 to 30 years depending on the species. A few records:

A Lasius niger queen can therefore see more than 30 generations of workers born and die over the course of her life.

Why such longevity?

Several explanations:

  • Constant care: the queen is fed, protected and never exposed to predators or the stress of hunting
  • Slowed metabolism: prolonged hibernation reduces cellular wear
  • Natural selection: only the long-lived have passed on their genes (a colony dies with its queen, so a long-lived queen means a long-lived colony)
  • Unique cellular mechanisms: recent research suggests a particular activity of telomerases (anti-ageing enzymes) in queens

And in captivity?

In captivity, lifespan can be close to that in the wild if conditions are respected. Mandatory hibernation every winter is crucial: without it, queens usually die in 5-7 years instead of 15-25.

This is one of the reasons so many beginner keepers lose their colony: they skip hibernation, and the queen wears out prematurely.

To preserve your queen

  • Mandatory hibernation every winter (3-4 months at 4-8°C for temperate species)
  • No mechanical stress (vibrations, handling)
  • Balanced diet (sugars + proteins)
  • Humidity suited to the species
  • No forced overcrowding

What happens when the queen dies?

When the queen of a monogynous colony dies, the colony is doomed. The workers carry on for a few months, then the colony slowly fades out for lack of renewal. It’s the end of a lineage.

Polygynous colonies (Myrmica rubra, for example) are more resilient: if one queen dies, the others take over. Some polygynous colonies can thus survive indefinitely, like a succession of generations.
