Why ants fascinate us: 6 surprising reasons

Why do so many enthusiasts devote their time to observing these tiny insects? Fascination with ants goes back to antiquity: Aristotle already wrote about them, and today thousands of hobbyists keep colonies in their living rooms. Here are 6 reasons that explain this unique appeal.

1. A society organised before our own

Ants have lived in societies for more than 100 million years. Back then, dinosaurs ruled the planet and our mammalian ancestors were barely the size of a mouse. Ants had already invented the division of labour, chemical communication and agriculture.

2. A prodigious diversity
