The giant of boreal forests

Camponotus herculeanus is the largest Camponotus in Europe and one of the most impressive ants on the continent. Bicoloured (reddish thorax, black head and gaster), it lives in the cold forests of the north and mountains, where it digs its galleries in the dead wood of conifers.

The majors reach 15 mm, the queens 16-18 mm — a record size for a European ant. Its cold resistance is exceptional: found up to 1,800 m altitude in the Alps, and beyond the Arctic Circle in Scandinavia.

A long hibernation is essential

C. herculeanus requires a long hibernation (5-6 months) at low temperature (3-8°C). Without this diapause, the colony declines and the queen becomes sterile within a few years. A cooling box, a dedicated fridge or a cool cellar is mandatory.

Social life in dead wood

Colonies live 30 to 50 years, sometimes more. A queen caught in a nuptial flight can accompany several generations of keepers. Wild colonies have 3,000 to 8,000 workers and occupy several neighbouring stumps linked by trails.

Marked defensive behaviour: the soldiers are aggressive, and formic acid can be sprayed several centimetres. Handle the nest carefully, especially after stress.

A realistic dead-wood nest

To recreate its natural habitat, offer it a conifer dead-wood nest (spruce, fir) or a wood + Ytong mix. It will use it more readily than a plaster nest. Add a few pieces of bark to the outworld so it feels at home.

Keeping

Cold to cool temperate: 18-24°C max when active. Humidity 60-70%. Hibernation 5-6 months at 3-8°C. Long claustral founding (the queen alone for 10-14 months before the first workers). Nuptial flight late May – June, later at altitude. A species for the patient enthusiast — an exceptional visual reward.
