The American red harvester ant
Pogonomyrmex barbatus is the emblematic harvester of the American South-west. Bright brick-red, with massive mandibles, it thrives in the deserts of Texas, New Mexico and northern Mexico. A strict granivore, it piles seeds into underground chambers.
