The Iberian Cataglyphis
Cataglyphis hispanica is one of the most active and visible Cataglyphis in Europe. Pale ochre, with long legs, it crosses arid soils at temperatures where most ants die. Active up to 50°C at ground level, it’s one of the most heat-loving ants known.
A scavenger above all: it brings back to the nest insects killed by the heat, which it locates thanks to an exceptional visual navigation. A worker can travel 100 m in a straight line and return to the nest without following a trail — a unique ability among ants.
Unlike its more demanding cousin C. cursor, C. hispanica adapts better to captivity. It accepts slightly less extreme temperatures (26-32°C) and slightly higher humidity. A good entry point into the Cataglyphis genus for an intermediate-to-expert keeper.
An unusual semi-claustral founding
Facultative pleometrosis: several queens can found together in some populations. In captivity, starting with 2-3 queens increases the success rate. Usually only one will survive after the workers emerge (the others are eliminated or isolate themselves).
First workers in 8-10 weeks at 28°C. The queen goes out to forage during founding (strictly semi-claustral). Offering it a fruit fly each week speeds up the start.
Without very low humidity (30-45%) and a warm spot at 30°C minimum, C. hispanica wears out and the brood dies. Invest in a heat mat with a thermostat. Too-high humidity is the main mistake that kills Cataglyphis in captivity.

Semi-arid desert, 26-34°C when active, humidity 30-45% (very dry). A heat mat + thermostat are mandatory. A winter diapause at 15-18°C for 3 months. Feeding: dead insects (thawed fruit flies, crickets), honeydew. A nest dry on one side, slightly humid on the other.
