The Balkan Cataglyphis
Cataglyphis nodus shares the general traits of the Cataglyphis genus: extreme heat-loving, long legs, light ochre, solitary scavenging behaviour. It stands out for its east-Mediterranean distribution (Greece, Balkans, Turkey) and its slightly more marked polymorphism.
Soldiers are visible from a hundred workers on: a massive head, powerful mandibles, they defend the nest entrance and help break down prey.
Like all Cataglyphis, C. nodus uses a celestial sun compass and counts its steps to measure distance. It can leave, travel 80 m without a trail and return to the nest by exactly the shortest path. A neurological phenomenon studied worldwide.
Life in modest colonies
C. nodus colonies are small (500 to 2,000 workers) but very active. A calm social life inside, but intense outings under the sun. In captivity, plan a large outworld: 30×40 cm minimum so they can express their foraging behaviour.
A mandatory but short winter diapause (3 months at 12-15°C). No fridge needed, an unheated room is enough.
C. nodus needs to cover large distances to express its natural behaviour. Without that, it stagnates and growth slows. Favour a vast outworld (40×30 cm min), with a few pebbles, sand and pieces of bark as landmarks.
Keeping
Dry Mediterranean, 26-34°C, humidity 30-45%. A 3-month diapause at 12-15°C. Nuptial flight in summer (June-July) after big storms. A heat mat is useful. Feeding: insect carrion, honeydew. Reserved for keepers with a heating/thermostat budget.
