The desert athlete

Cataglyphis cursor is a Mediterranean and North African ant adapted to extreme heat. It can forage at ground temperatures exceeding 50°C, where most ants are literally cooked. Its golden to silvery colour reflects the sunlight, and its long legs give it a record speed (among the fastest in the animal kingdom relative to its size).

A fascinating quirk: Cataglyphis has an exceptional sense of direction. It navigates using the sun’s position and a true internal “step counter” to find its nest in featureless desert landscapes.

The internal GPS of Cataglyphis

Researchers proved that by gluing tiny stilts under Cataglyphis legs, you make them overshoot their nest because their calibrated “step counter” is thrown off. Conversely, by shortening their legs, they stop short. The mechanism is unique in the animal kingdom.

Keeping in hot, dry conditions

Cataglyphis requires desert conditions: 28-32°C on average (up to 35°C at peak), low humidity (20-40%), a sandy substrate. A terrarium heat cable is generally needed. Avoid excessive humidity, which can make the nest mould.

Founding and growth

Nuptial flight in summer. The queen does a claustral founding lasting 6-10 weeks. Colonies stay modest (500-2000 workers).

Very brief hibernation

Unlike continental species, Cataglyphis hibernates only briefly (1-2 months) at 12-15°C. Too cold kills it.
