The small Asian carpenter ant
Camponotus parius is one of the most accessible Camponotus of Asia. Uniformly brown-red, of modest size (4-9 mm for workers), it’s an excellent compromise between exoticism and ease of keeping.
Native to southern China, Vietnam and Thailand, it adapts well to slightly cooler temperatures than strictly tropical Camponotus (22-28°C is enough). Moderate polymorphism, majors visible from a hundred workers on.
Before taking on demanding tropical species (P. dives, Oecophylla, Atta), C. parius is a good learning step. Flexible keeping conditions, steady growth, and lovely coppery-red colours that recall the European Camponotus but warmer.
Facultative diapause
Native to subtropical zones, C. parius can be kept without hibernation or with a light diapause (2 months at 18°C). Colonies last slightly longer with a respected diapause, but it isn’t vital.
Moderate growth: 500 workers in 2 years, 2,000 in 4-5 years. The queen lives 12-15 years with careful keeping.
