The discreet acrobat
Crematogaster sordidula is the lesser-known cousin of C. scutellaris. Smaller (2.5-3.5 mm), more discreet, brown-red with the same characteristic raised gaster in a defensive posture, it lives in southern Europe and around the Mediterranean.
Like all Crematogaster, it can raise its gaster over its thorax to release an irritating secretion. Spectacular to watch in an agitated colony.
A secondary arboreal species, it enjoys a nest with a few vertical branches or bark in the outworld. It recreates its natural habitat of bark and hollow trunks. A horizontal plaster or Ytong nest + a vertical wooden element = the ideal setup.
Monogynous/polygynous variability
Depending on the population, C. sordidula can be monogynous (a single queen) or polygynous. In captivity, polygynous colonies are more stable and productive. If possible, start with 2-3 queens accompanied by workers.
Moderate but steady growth: 2,000-5,000 workers in 4-5 years. Marked defensive behaviour, clearly visible foraging trails.
C. sordidula does fine with a light winter diapause at 12-15°C for 3 months. No fridge needed. The queen lives 10-15 years with careful keeping — longer if the diapause is respected.

Mediterranean, 22-28°C, humidity 50-60%. A 3-month winter diapause at 12-15°C. A plaster or Ytong nest + a vertical element is appreciated. Classic feeding: honeydew, insects, occasional seeds. A good alternative for anyone who finds C. scutellaris too common.
