The yellow meadow ant
Lasius flavus is one of the most widespread ants in Europe, but one of the most discreet: it lives almost entirely underground, leaving its nest only on rare occasions. It’s the one that forms those little grassy domes you see in meadows and old lawns — each dome shelters a colony.
Its yellow-ochre colour and compact silhouette immediately set it apart from Lasius niger. It farms subterranean aphids on the roots of grasses and feeds mainly on their honeydew, almost never on the surface.
Lasius flavus is perfect for observing an underground nest: go for a Ytong or plaster nest with deep galleries. It develops slowly on the surface but digs a lot. A side observation window is more relevant than a top view.
A fascinating underground life
The queen founds in strict claustral fashion: she seals herself in after the nuptial flight (July-August) and only feeds again when the first workers emerge. Allow 6 to 10 months for the first workers in captivity.
A mature colony has 5,000 to 10,000 workers, sometimes more. Nuptial flights often happen simultaneously across a whole area, on a stormy late-summer afternoon. The queens are large and winged, easy to recognise.
L. flavus nests play a key role in aerating meadow soils and circulating nutrients. In some parts of Europe (UK, Netherlands), the nests are protected and flagged in conservation plans for old grasslands.
