A spectacular and unusual ant

Messor barbarus is the great harvester ant of the Mediterranean. Native to southern France, Spain and the Maghreb, it’s one of the most impressive species you can keep in a temperate region. Its granivorous nature (it feeds mainly on seeds) makes it an economical species: no need to breed insects to feed it.

The real show is its polymorphism: a single colony has workers of widely varying sizes, from 3 mm minors to 14 mm majors (the “soldiers”), fitted with a huge black head and powerful mandibles to crush seeds.

Why Messor barbarus is ideal for beginners

  • No live insects to breed: fed from a seed store
  • Very hardy, undemanding on humidity
  • Massive nuptial flight (October-November): easy to find a queen
  • A spectacular colony within a few years

The nuptial flight and founding

The nuptial flight takes place in autumn, usually between late September and early November, after the first rains. It’s one of the most spectacular flights: thousands of black winged queens emerge at once. Finding a mated queen is very easy at this time in southern France.

Founding is claustral: the queen stays in the test tube and raises her first workers alone in 3 to 6 weeks. Unlike insectivorous species, you can introduce a few poppy or chia seeds as soon as the first workers appear.

The seed store

A Messor colony stores its seeds in dedicated chambers called seed granaries. The workers crush the seeds to make a “paste” known as ant bread, rich in carbohydrates and proteins. Vary the seeds: poppy, chia, flax, sesame, fonio, millet. Avoid treated seeds and oil.

Watch for mould

Leftover seeds can mould in a too-humid nest. Messor prefers fairly dry humidity (30-50%). Regularly remove waste and uneaten seeds.

Growth and setup

A colony can reach 1000 workers in 2-3 years, 10,000 in 5-7 years. Plan an upgradable setup: a test tube to start, then a large plaster or Ytong nest with a spacious outworld. Messor loves to dig, so provide a natural substrate to observe this behaviour.
