The California harvester ant
Pogonomyrmex californicus is the peaceful cousin of P. barbatus. Smaller, with a slightly more orange red, it populates the deserts of California, Arizona and Baja California. Similar behaviour: granivorous, active by day, with long foraging trails.
A notable quirk: mandatory pleometrosis in some populations. Several queens (2 to 5) found together to boost early survival. After the first workers emerge, usually only one queen survives.
If you catch several P. californicus queens in the same place, you can attempt a pleometrotic founding by housing them together. A very interesting behaviour to observe: early cooperation, then competition after the first workers. An area of active scientific research.
Venom and defence
The same toxic venom as P. barbatus, the same handling precautions. The workers sting in connection with an alarm-pheromone release that draws in other workers — a risk of multiple stings if you stress the colony.
Colonies of 5,000 to 10,000 workers at maturity. A mandatory winter diapause (3-4 months at 12-15°C) despite the hot-desert origin — it’s the photoperiod that triggers the diapause, not extreme cold.
Toxic venom, handle with long tweezers only. A drastic escape barrier. A single sting = 3-5h of pain. Don’t keep it around children or people allergic to hymenopterans.
