An ant colony lives to the rhythm of the seasons. Understanding this annual cycle is essential to anticipate your colony’s needs and to tell what is normal from what isn’t.
Winter (December-February): hibernation
In European species, winter is the period of mandatory hibernation. The queen stops laying, larvae go dormant, and the whole colony slows its metabolism. This phase is indispensable to the reproductive cycle.
- Ideal temperature: 4 to 8°C
- Duration: 3 to 4 months
- Locations: cool cellar, unheated garage, fridge crisper drawer
Skipping or shortening hibernation is the most damaging mistake. Without hibernation, the queen burns through her reserves, the colony gradually declines, and mortality rises sharply in the 2nd or 3rd year.
Spring (March-May): the restart
The gradual awakening marks the start of a new active season. Raise the temperature progressively (5°C → 12°C → 18°C → 22°C over 2-3 weeks). The queen resumes laying, larvae develop, and the first workers emerge after a few weeks.
This is the period of maximum growth: plan for more food (proteins + sugars), watch the humidity, and observe the rapid expansion of the brood.
Summer (June-August): the peak of activity
Summer is the high point of the cycle:
- Maximum worker activity
- Maximum egg-laying by the queen
- Appearance of reproductives (males and future winged queens) in mature colonies (usually from the 4th year)
- First nuptial flights of the summer species
Seeing the first males and winged queens appear in your colony is a milestone. It means the colony is mature. Sadly, nuptial flights almost never happen in captivity: the reproductives die or have to be released.
Autumn (September-November): preparation
Autumn is the phase of preparing for hibernation. The queen slows her laying, larvae stock up on reserves, workers store food. The colony gradually winds down its activity.
It’s also the time of the autumn nuptial flights (Messor barbarus, Aphaenogaster, Crematogaster).
