The continental harvester ant
Messor structor is the harvester of the temperate steppes and plains of central and eastern Europe. Smaller and more discreet than its Mediterranean cousin M. barbarus, it is nonetheless a strict granivore that forms long trails to bring seeds back to the nest.
Brown-red, with marked polymorphism (from 4 to 9 mm), it has large majors with powerful mandibles to husk tough seeds. Mature colonies hold 5,000 to 15,000 workers, with a highly structured organisation of storage chambers.
If you want the fascinating behaviours of Messor (harvesting, seed-crushing, seed gardens in the nest) but your climate is too cool for M. barbarus, M. structor is for you. More cold-tolerant, with a classic European hibernation and earlier nuptial flights.
Seed gardening
The workers bring seeds to the nest and store them in dedicated chambers (“silos”). The majors crush the hardest ones with their massive mandibles, creating a seed-mash paste called “ant bread” — the main food of the colony and the brood.
Seed sorting is meticulous: mouldy or bad seeds are dumped outside. Watching this management is one of the finest myrmecological sights.
Even though M. structor is mainly granivorous, it also accepts small insects from time to time. One fruit fly a week provides the animal protein the larvae need. Without it, the brood can stall.
Keeping
Temperate continental, 20-26°C when active, humidity 50-60%. Hibernation of 4 months at 5-10°C. Nuptial flights in May-June. Feeding: varied seeds (poppy, chia, flax, sesame) + occasional fruit flies + pure water. A plaster/Ytong nest with multiple chambers. A medium outworld.
